The first sight we saw upon arriving at the track at 8:30
Back Home Again - and the balloons are released!
The balloons continue to drift towards the Hoosier sky
The Goodyear blimp flies right through the balloons
The command is given and engines roar to life!
The first two rows near the end of the parade lap and the pace lap is about to begin
The pace car is in and the field is coming to the green
The entire field is off of four and on the main straight
The front row is nicely aligned looking for the green
Look at the lead Gordy has at the completion of lap one!
Lloyd Ruby in the second Team McLaren car started 6th but burned a piston after only 7 laps
Mario Andretti is charging from his 27th starting position
Gordy is out after only 11 laps and finishes 31st
Wally is out front and pulling away. He would lead 96 laps this day.

Tom Sneva running good early from his 4th starting position
A.J. Foyt and Johnny Rutherford battle for second
Foyt still holds on to second

Gary Bettenhausen and Bobby Allison - neither would finish
At this point I was thinking Wally was a sure winner
Steve Krisiloff had a good day, finishing 11th
Bettenhausen and Vukovich - two racing sons of famous racing fathers
Bobby Allison's day ended when his gearbox failed after leading one lap
Bobby Unser pits while the sun is still faintly out - his pit strategy helped win the race
